Gerald Albert Mata, 77 years old and formally from Monroe, Michigan, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends in Ocala, Florida on June 5, 2025.
Gerald "Jerry" was born in Monroe to Albert and Margaret Helen Mata. He graduated from Eastern Michigan University. Jerry served his country proudly by joining the US Navy and then being assigned to the aircraft carrier USS John F Kennedy out of Norfolk, Virginia. After the service Jerry met and then married the love of his life, Joan Paul. They had been looking forward to celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this October.
Jerry and Joan moved to Ocala, Florida five years ago and to no one's surprise, between his wit and charm, immediately developed everlasting friendships. Jerry and Joan loved to travel and enjoyed going on cruises all over the world.
Jerry loved all sports but especially any and all teams from the state of Michigan. He never missed watching a Detroit Tiger baseball game on TV in his "man cave". Jerry was never happier than talking with and spending time with his three brothers. The last time they were all together was at a Michigan State football game. God, country, family and friends were paramount to Jerry.
Jerry is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Albert and Margaret Helen Mata. He is survived by his wife Joan, three brothers, Thomas (Norma) of Nashville, Tennessee, Joseph (Gayla) of St. Louis, Missouri, and Richard (Donna) of Ypsilanti, Michigan. Also five nieces and four nephews and many great nieces and nephews.
A memorial will be held in Ocala, Florida on June 21, 2025 at the Central Church of Christ. An additional memorial will be held at the St. Joseph's Cemetery in Monroe, Michigan on August 2, 2025.
Jerry "stories" will be told and retold at gatherings for years to come. No goodbyes Jerry, just "see you later",
