Johnie Lee Early

June 29, 1943 — September 9, 2025

Johnie was born in Leon County, Florida on June 29, 1943 to the late Dorothy Perry-Early. Upon her death early in his life, He was blessed to be raised by two bonus parents: Virgle and Leila Roberts who were his Uncle and Aunt. He proudly lived a life of service to God and country, love of family and community.

Johnie graduated in 1961 from Howard Academy High School in Monticello, Florida, and went on to secure his Associate of Arts Degree from the University of Alaska Anchorage in May of 1990. He enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served honorably from 1961 until his retirement in 1990. At that time he embarked upon a new career as a Corrections Officer in Alaska where he served until his retirement in 2001. After relocating to Ocala, Florida, Johnie continued to work in seasonal positions as a Tax Preparer and Census Field Representative.

His love of God compelled him to join The First Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in November of 2002 under Rev. Alec Richardson, where he was ordained a Deacon on July 26, 2015, by Rev. Allen Brooks, Jr. His favorite hymn, “Father I Stretch My Hands to Thee”, reflected the faith that guided his life. He was conscious of his Spiritual needs and took his duties as a Deacon very seriously. Johnie also continued to embrace his love of gardening and animals by raising an Elite herd of goats that were sought after by many. Family, friends, and associates found joy in receiving photos showcasing the fruit of his labor. He never lost his love of farming.

During his military career, Johnie met and married the Love of his Life, Julia Mae Norris Early. The close bond of love between the two was clear to all. Sadly she preceded him in death, as well as his devoted brother, Joseph Early, brother-in-law, Johnnie Pritchett, sister-in-law, Bessie T. Early and beloved, daughter La-Von Julie Landis. We prayerfully look forward to the days when death will be no more.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted sister Janie Early Pritchett, daughter Mardell Lori Dunn, sons Lamont Self and Norris Self. Johnie found great joy in spending time with his grandchildren: CherRon D. Salemma (Michael), Dana R. Dunn, Darryl R. Dunn, Cody Self, and Shae Self.

Proverbs 18:24 .... there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother/sister: Celestine Thomas, Jamielle Plummer, Ruth Churchwell, Curley Williams Jr., Butler Hagins, Leon Hill, Nick Williams, Carlissa Huggins, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and sorrowing friends. His earthly journey has ended, but his legacy of faith, service, and love lives on in all who knew him.
