Melissa Kay Sorensen

Oct 7, 1979 — Jul 31, 2026

Melissa Kay Sorensen, 46, passed away on July 31, 2026 in Ocala, Florida. She was born October 7, 1979, a daughter of Benjamin and Karen Gamel. Melissa attended Interlachen High School in Interlachen, Florida. Melissa had an avid love for poetry, writing and reading a good book. Her love for reading ultimately led her to enjoy a career working as an assistant librarian in Mulberry, Florida. Her love extended not just to her family but to the many animals she cared for over the years. She had a special place in her heart for rescue animals. Among these were her cats – Liza, Reku, and Gremlin; as well as her only dog (and faithful companion) – Harlee. Each one brought her great joy. Melissa spent several of her young adult years in New Zealand; but eventually returned home to be with her family. She loved to spend as much of her free time at the beach and enjoying the many parks and amusement parks in and around her home. Her quick wit and kind heart always made others feel relaxed and welcome. She will be deeply missed by all her family and friends.

She is survived by her mother, Karen Gamel, and sisters, Deborah Paige Bailey (Steve) and Teresa Faye Crockett (Mark) as well as her nieces, nephews and grands that she considered her own. Melissa was preceded in death by her father, Benjamin Gamel, Jr. and her infant sister, Cheryl Lynn.

Countryside has been entrusted with the final arrangements.
