Robert Benjamin David

Robert Benjamin David, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2025, in Gainesville, Florida, at the age of 86. Born on September 17, 1938, in the Bronx, New York, Robert was the son of Oliver and Francis David, who preceded him in death, along with his brother Oliver and sister Allegra.

Robert’s educational journey began at the Bronx High School of Science, where his passion for learning flourished. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Hunter College, followed by a PhD from Columbia University in clinical psychology. In the mid 1970s, while working in a Florida treatment center, Robert met Judith McBride, who at the time was working on her own doctorate in mental health counseling.

Judith became the love of Robert's life and their partnership, built on mutual respect and affection, spanned nearly five decades. Together, they established a private practice in Gainesville, Florida, where they positively impacted countless lives. Judith’s unwavering love and support were especially evident in Robert’s later years as he faced the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease.

Robert’s greatest joy was his family. He delighted in being a grandfather and was the biggest kid at family reunions. He took immense pride in his identical twin sons, Benjamin and Jonathan, both of whom graduated from the University of Florida and went on to serve as neighboring elected District Attorneys in southeastern North Carolina. He is survived by Jonathan, his wife Ashley, and their children Tyson, Zoey, and Gia. He is also survived by Benjamin, his wife Stephanie, and their children Madeline, Sophie, and Fitz.

Robert was a voracious reader and lifelong learner. He was a master builder who constructed his family's home with his own hands. He was an avid skier, adroit sailor, long distance swimmer, and skilled athlete. A staunch environmentalist, whose love of nature was evident in every aspect of his life, Robert was deeply devoted to his health and had the good fortune of marrying a master vegetarian chef. His intense focus on diet and exercise allowed him to enjoy an active lifestyle well into his mid-80s. Although he traveled the world and never met a stranger, his favorite spot on earth was the lake house he shared with his family.

Robert’s legacy of love, dedication, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be remembered not only for his professional contributions but also for the warmth and joy he brought to his family and friends. A private memorial service will be held to honor his life and the profound impact he had on those around him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Prairie Creek Conservancy in Robert’s memory.
