Cynthia Burns

Cynthia Lee Burns, 68, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2021.  Born to Charles and Jane Burns in November 1952, in Tampa FL, she received her BS in Psychology from University of Florida, and her MSW from Florida State University.  Cyndi was passionate about her work, retiring as Director of Court Services for Alachua County, after more than 30 years of dedicated service in 2010.

During her tenure as Director of Court Services, Cyndi was an integral member of the criminal justice system in Alachua County. She served on many teams and committees comprising of the judiciary, States Attorney, Public Defender, mental health professionals, law enforcement and other community partners which defined programs and policies concerning the community- based supervision of incarcerated citizens.  Under her leadership she assisted the Alachua County BOCC in the development of some of the most innovative and renowned diversion programs in the nation such as Pretrial Services, Drug Court, Mental Health Court and Day Reporting.   She was considered an expert at both the state and national level in the Pretrial Services network.

Cyndi independently made her way across the entire USA and parts of Canada in her RV, and even toured several European countries.  She especially loved her time watching the sunsets out West.   Cyndi’s journey has now ended – reaching her final destination in the West Meadow at Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery, Gainesville FL, where a private family burial will take place.   She is survived by her brother James Burns (wife Diane), nieces Chelsey Burns and Lauren Burns.  Cyndi also leaves behind many cherished friends and colleagues across the United States.
