Jan Seutter

March 24, 1949 — November 4, 2021

Silver Springs

Jan Deverne Seutter, 72 of Silver Springs, Florida, passed away on November 4, 2021 at home surrounded by his loving family. Jan was born in Wilmington DE to Walter H. Seutter, Jr. and Miriam V. Seutter. His family relocated to Newark, DE and later moved to Felton, DE where he graduated from Felton High School. It was there that Jan met actor Robert Mitchum and was his stunt double for trick riding in his movies and later shod his horses.

In his illustrious career, he and his father trained and led the high diving horses at the Atlantic City Steel Pier up the steps 40 feet for them to dive into a 12-foot pool, despite his fear of water. He attended Texas A&M for 2 years with the hope of becoming a veterinarian but decided to take a different career path. He then enrolled at the Heavy Equipment College of America in North Carolina, and he graduated with Honors. While beginning his career in construction in South Jersey, he continued to train and shoe horses, which became his lifelong passion. After Jan met and married his wife, Judey, they began fostering children in New Jersey and continued when they moved to Anthony, Florida. They fostered over 50 children through the years. Jan was a certified farrier and member of the AFA for over 50 years, an APHA judge while living in NJ, and trained many world champion riders and horses. He was also one of the founding members of the Garden State Paint Horse Club and the Garden State Paint Horse Youth Club. Jan’s legend as a skilled farrier left an unmatched imprint on the industry. His excellence for teaching was noted throughout the equestrian world. Jan was a farrier to many notable people such as Kenny Rogers, Sally Starr, William Shatner, and Brandi and Roy Halliday. In his gentle and unassuming style, Jan treated all clients with respect and as friends. In 2007 Jan began to transition from showing horses to showing iron horses. Riding and competing in custom bike shows with his Harley-Davidson became his second passion.

Jan is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Judey A. Seutter (nee Galletta), son Jose’ Seutter (Kate), daughters Kelley Niedoba (Joe) and Stacey Cline (Tony), grandchildren Logan Cline (Octavia), Delaney Cline, Sydney Cline and Jayden Seutter, and great-granddaughter Winter Cline. Also, sisters Michele Schutte, Cherie Townley and Sandra Seutter, sisters and brothers in law, many nieces and nephews and his beloved dogs Maggie and Oreo.

Jan was a humble, hardworking man, loving husband, father, grandfather, great- grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to so many. He will always be remembered for who he was, what he did and all the lives he touched, plus his never-ending, infectious smile. Rest easy cowboy. Welcome to Heaven, your entry fees are paid.
