MULLINS, Laurie Izlar

Starke - Laurie I. Mullins, age 92, passed away on her birthday, Monday March 25, 2019 at Ocala Regional Medical Center, surrounded by her family. Born and raised in Ocala, Florida, on March 25, 1927, to Lauriston Theodore and Carolyn White Izlar.  She received her B.S. in Elementary Education from Duke University and a Master’s of Education from Auburn University.  She was an elementary school teacher for 32 years and a substitute teacher for 10, was the first recipient of the Bradford County Teacher of the year.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for her entire life, where she served on the Church Council Board, Nominations, Worship, Education, Vacation Bible School, After-School Program, Prayer Committee and Staff Parrish Relations Committee.  Over the years she taught Sunday school at every level.  She was very dedicated to the United Methodist Women by being in the supporting roles as Chairmen of Guild, Circle Unit, Spiritual Growth, Program Resources, Bazaar Chairman and UMW Executive Board.

Girl Scouts was a big part of her life.  She was an active member for 66 years, during that time she took a leadership role in every level, was Nayati Day Camp Director, Trainer, Events Chair, Service Unit Manager, Recognitions Committee, Gold Award Chairman and National Delegate.  She received awards as Outstanding leader, Outstanding volunteer, Thanks Badge, Continuing Excellence, 100 in 100 Award and the Cross and Flame Award.

She was also involved in the community through the Museum Board, Junior Women’s Club and the Back Pack Committee.  She received the Chamber of Commerce Citizen and Humanitarian of the Year award, Santa Fe College Women of Distinction and Honoree of “Leave a Legacy” from the Bradford County Education Foundation.

She is preceded in death by her parents Lauriston Theodore and Carolyn Izlar, husband, Robert S. Mullins, Sr., brother, Lauriston Theodore Izlar, III, and nephew that she helped raise, Lauriston Theodore Izlar, IV (Bobbi).

She is survived by her sons, Robert S. Mullins, Jr. (Terri) of Ft. Pierce, and Glenn Wesley Mullins (Dianne) of Deland; daughter, Patricia Mullins Williams (Gaylon) of Ocala; nieces that she helped raise, Lynn Izlar Parks (David) and Debra Kay Izlar; thirteen grandchildren, Lauren Mullins-Zito (Justin), Ashley Mullins, Bobby Mullins, III, Rachel Cook (Ted), Wesley Mullins, Chip Williams (Kelsey), Bo Williams, Luke Izlar (Daniele), Britta Izlar, Blaire Izlar, Triston Izlar, Dawn Parlin (Nick), and Josh Peddle and six great-grandchildren.  She will be truly missed by the many friends and family that knew her as a good, caring, loving and generous person.

The family will receive guests at 10:00 am followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am, Saturday, May 4, 2019, at the First United Methodist Church of Starke. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Methodist Women, P.O. Box 157, Starke, Fl  32091. Arrangements are under the care of Countryside Funeral Home, Anthony, FL.
